Winner of the “Carlos Paredes” prize 2011, a extremely relevant award given to albums that contribute to the Portuguese culture.

With clear influences of contemporary jazz, classical music, contemporary as well as Portuguese music, André Carvalho 5tet’s style, combines the classical with the new and modern in an inspiring original musical product.
Formed in 2008 by André Carvalho, the group plays only André's original compositions written specially to this formation.
The album released now by Tone Of A Pitch records with a special guest, Mariana Norton, Lisbon based singer, is expected to be truly special, a combination of jazz and classic, with a Portuguese touch.

Featuring Zé Maria (tenor and soprano saxophone), Bruno Santos (guitar), Filipe Melo (piano, Fender Rhodes and melodica), André Carvalho (double bass), João Rijo (Drums) and Mariana Norton (vocals on "Postkarte").

Recorded in September 2010 in Timbuktu Studios, Lisbon. Mixed and Mastered by Tiago Sousa. All compositions by André Carvalho. Released June 1, 2011 on Tone of a Pitch.

André Carvalho

Portuguese jazz bassist and composer André Carvalho is an active NYC freelancer whose works AllAboutJAzz described as “both in bounds and out of this world.” Nate Chinen of The New York Times dubbed Carvalho a bassist “you should get to know.” He’s played with Jazz stars Chris Cheek, Will Vinson, and Tommy Crane. And André’s performance credits range from the Colors Jazz Festival (Paris), the Cairo Jazz Festival, and Jazz Festival Ljubliana, to venues such as Blue Note (New York), Konzerthaus Berlin, and Casa da Música (Porto).
